A – like father
E – like elephant
I – like street
O – like open
U – like boot

A, O, and U  are "hard" vowels - they give C and G a hard sound when followed by one of these vowels.
      CA –  like cotton /kah            CHE - like Kent
      CO – like coke                          CHI - like key
      CU – like coop
 
      GA - like Gandhi                     GHE - like get
      GO - like gold                           GHI - like piggy
      GU - like goop

      SCA - like Ska                           SCHE - like skeleton
      SCO - like scope                      SCHI - like ski
      SCU - like scooter

* ‘H’ is silent at the beginning of a word; within a word its function is to give the letters C and G a hard sound…
 
ex. ch = k 
      gh = g (like get)
E and I  are "soft" vowels - they give C and G a soft sound when followed by one of these vowels
      CE - like chess                       CIA – like cha-cha
      CI - like cheese                      CIO - like chosen
                                                          CIU - like choose
 
      GE - like jello                          GIA - like jolly /jah
      GI - like jeep                           GIO - like Joseph
                                                         GIU - like June

      SCE - like shell                      SCIA - like shot / ​shah
      SCI - like sheet                     SCIO - like show
                                                        SCIU - like shoe
 
 
 

GL creates a LY sound
      maglia > malya                             aglio > alyo                    gli  > lyee     (this can be tricky!)
      (sweater/knit shirt)                             (garlic)                 [place your tongue behind your top front teeth and leave it there as you try to say "yee"]
 

 GN creates a NY sound (like ñ in Spanish)
       gnocchi > nyoh-key                     bagno >  ba-nyoh

S  has a light 'z' sound when it appears between two vowels
       casa > caza                                   rosa > roza
