Essere o Stare

Since both essere and stare are translated as “to be”, language learners sometimes encounter challenges in knowing when to use them. This confusion can be compounded by a peculiarity of the Italian language – both essere and stare have the same past participle – stato.
"Io sono stato" can mean both ‘I have been’ and ‘I have stayed’.

Let’s try to clarify things by looking at the uses of each verb.

ESSERE

Essere is used to express...

1. Identity, nationality, and profession.
            Io sono Alessandra.   I am Alessandra.
  Sono un’insegnante e sono italiana.     I am a teacher, and I am Italian.

2. Origin
Adesso abitiamo a Roma, ma siamo di Milano.         We live in Rome now, but we are from
Milan.

3. Physical appearance and characteristics of something or someone
            Marco è alto.                                       Marco is tall.
            La macchina è vecchia. The car is old.
Tu sei davvero divertente.              You are really fun/funny.

4. Location
            Le chiavi sono nel cassetto.          The keys are in the drawer

5. Religious and political affiliation
            Michele è buddista.   Michele is Buddhist.

6. Time and date
            Sono le cinque.                                    It is five o’clock.
            È il 15 maggio.                                     It is May 15th.

7. Possession
            La borsa gialla è di Lucia.   The yellow purse is Lucia’s

8. A temporary condition or emotion
            Sono arrabbiata.                                I am angry.
            Sono malato.                                       I am sick.

9. Opinions and personal observations
            Quel maglione è sporco.                That sweater is dirty.

STARE

Stare is used to express...

1. Precise or usual location
            Le chiavi stanno nel cassetto.             The keys are in the drawer.

2. Idiomatic expressions
            Sto bene. I am fine.
            Quella gonna ti sta davvero bene.      That skirt fits you really well.

3. An order or exhortation
            Stai zitto! Be quiet!
            Stia tranquillo!   Calm down! (lit. be calm)

4. A posture, position, or emotional state
            Stare seduti a lungo non fa bene alla salute. Sitting too long is not good for your health.
            Sto in piedi tutto il giorno. I stand all day.
            Stare in ansia. To be anxious.

5. The position of inanimate objects
            La casa sta in collina.                                       The house is on the hill.
            Dove stanno gli occhiali?                                 Where are my eyeglasses?

6. “Just about to” do sth. (stare per + infinitive)
            Stavo per mangiare, quando tu mi hai telefonato.     I was about to eat, when you phoned me.

7. To be in a relationship with someone (stare con + qualcuno)
            Stanno insieme. They are together (in a relationship).
            Paolo sta con Giulia.                            Paolo is (in a relationship) with Giulia.

8. Continuous actions (stare + gerund)
            Non posso uscire adesso. Sto studiando l’italiano.     I can’t go out right now. I’m studying
Italian.

9. Take the place of the verbs restare and rimanere in certain situations.
            Non posso venire. Oggi alle 13.00 sto al lavoro. I can’t come. Today at 1pm, I’ll be at work.
            Sto a casa stasera.   I’m staying home tonight.
